Tooth brushing Techniques

There are four brushing methods that dental professionals promote their patients to use, each addressing different oral health issues. They’re not like the usual ‘scrubbing’ method that most patients use which is harmful to their tooth and gum structure.  These professional brushing techniques actually help to endorse the health of the teeth and gums:

Stallman’s Brushing Method

Indications for use: for patients with gingivitis; to eradicate plaque form over the gum line.

Method/Technique: the bristles are held at a 45° angle in the direction of the gum line. Half of the bristles must be casing the gums, and the other half of the bristles should be on the tooth surface. By making short and light horizontal movements, the plaque is detached from over the gum line. These motions movements help out to eliminate plaque and rouse the gums.

Bass (Sulcular) Brushing Method

Indications for use: for patients with periodontitis; to eradicate plaque from below the gum line.

Method/Technique: like Stillman’s, the bristles are held at a 45° angle in the direction of the gum line. Very minor force and vibratory movements  are made so that the bristles go vaguely beneath the gum line.

Both Stillman’s and Bass brushing methods can be ‘modified’ by gently sweeping the bristles away from the gums after performing the instructed brushing method.

Charter’s Brushing Method

Indications for use: for patients with orthodontic braces.

Method/Technique: with the bristles positioned at a 45° angle, direct them so that they remove plaque from above the brackets and arch wire, then direct them so that the bristles remove plaque from below the brackets and arch wire. This will ensure that plaque is removed from all surfaces of the braces.

Circular Brushing Method

Indications: For juvenile patients; patients with deprived manual deftness; in mishmash with any extra brushing method; for healthy patients in its place of “scrubbing” method.

Method/Technique: The bristles are held at a 45° angle on the way to the gum line. Make little and gentle circular shaped brush strokes overlie each tooth surface until all surfaces are attained.

The Timing of Braces/Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontics Treatment

Patients of every age factor walk into a dental clinic looking for orthodontic treatment, either appearing to add to their aesthetics or for upgrading in function. Age has for eternity played a decisive part in choosing the treatment plan for any patient. Age is also a factor that parents and patients are concerned about while in quest of orthodontic correction.“ At what age should I take my child for her orthodontic checkup?”….“Will wearing braces at my age of 40 perk up my smile?”….These are instance of questions often raised concerning the age issue in orthodontics by the common civic.

Orthodontics Treatment

The natural procedure implicated in moving teeth is the similar at any age. Children and adults can both get profit from orthodontics. Orthodontics Treatment can be started as near the beginning as earlier than the birth of the child, in the form of parent edification on upholding an approving atmosphere for the healthy growth and development of the kid. The parent ought to also be well-informed on the special habits and how a apparently risk-free habit is consistently the root for most malocclusions later in life.

In determining the most approving timing for orthodontic treatment, 2 considerations are important:

Efficacy and competence. The timing of treatment can have an effect on both important issues. Both must be kept in mind when making your mind up when to treat various orthodontic problems. Growth amendment often is enviable.  If One begins growth alteration too late, it doesn’t work; if one starts it too soon, it takes too long.

Facial growth in the 3 planes of space refuse to adult levels at different times. so, it makes sense to time growth alteration measures differently for  different troubles. The timing of treatment often must be adjusted because skeletal and dental growths are not in synchrony.

The principle law for orthodontic treatment timing is throughout the adolescent growth spurt, starting in the late mixed or near the beginning of permanent dentition. The primary signal for holding up treatment beyond the adolescent growth spurt is extended increase in an adverse pattern i.e.  Either the mandible is too forward or the maxilla is placed too far back. Two-stage treatment is more expensive both in terms of money and time  is obligatory than one stage treatment but often the outcome are superior and far more established than one stage treatment wherever indicated. Hence there is no age block or a fixed age for treatment that the treatment should be started only subsequent to all the primary teeth have dropped or that once you are an adult, you can’t have braces.

Orthodontics for adults

Orthodontics for adults

After all the heed that is given to deciduous/ primary teeth, there still occur occasions wherein it is hard to stay away from malocclusions, particularly in cases of skeletal abnormality. In nearly everyone cases, treatment for adults is nearly alike as for children. As talked about before, teeth can be straightened at any time. Patients who have teeth and strong sustaining structures are not at all too older for orthodontic remedy. Age is not a issue. A lot of adults are getting orthodontic care that was not accessible to them as broods. They appreciate that improving the physical condition of their mouths and the magnetism of their smiles and facial looks can cause in modifications for the better in their private, public, and proficient lives. orthodontic treatment

Also the treatment carried out at an early age avoids psychological disturbances as a result of coping with full fledged malocclusion.

Orthodontic Treatment carried out during adolescence or still later in an adult has certain drawbacks like the treatment carried out in in adult patients cannot make use of growth potential. At the same time, most skeletal malocclusion indicated for orthognathic surgery are to be treated after growth completion so as avoid recurrent growth changes associated with  continuation of abnormal growth pattern.   The treatment options in adults are limited to moving teeth and surgery.

Young patient exhibits increased vascularity and cellularity of the periodontal membrane and bone as compared to older patient. Patients of younger age are hence more responsive to orthodontic force, which makes it possible to move teeth faster. Most of the orthodontic corrections are effectively carried out during the growth period. Due to this fact that younger growing patient react more favorably to treatment.  It is nevertheless possible to move teeth in older patient by altering the force magnitude and duration. As adult exhibits greater density of bone, orthodontic tooth movement is much slower.

Invisalign Vs. Braces: 10 Things You Need To Know

Healthy and Beautiful smile is desired by one and all. Yet the structure of our jaws and the way teeth are placed inside our mouth makes a great impact on our smile. Imperfect smile can trigger inferiority complex in young as well as elderly. Braces and Invisalign are two treatment methods which can help in closing the gaps and realignment of teeth for a beautiful smile. The first remarkable difference between the two is that braces are fixed metallic bracket whereas invisalign are the clear ones.

Invisalign Vs. Braces

The traditional metal braces have been in existence for a long time, but the clear invisalign aligners gained momentum in the field of cosmetic dentistry only around year 2000. Invisalign is a smooth and effective way of gently moving teeth but it is most effective for cases with minimal complications. Yet, whatever option you go with, it would be your responsibility to wear them on a daily basis and take the prescribed care and precautions so as to get the desired results.

Some of the key factors which influence your choice between braces vs. invisalign are: your age, your lifestyle, your expectations with respect to the outcome, your doctor as well as your ability in following the instructions, how serious you are in wearing them regularly and lastly, your budget.

Here are some key facts about Invisalign and braces which will help you in making the right choices.

Regular Consultation: With fixed metal braces, the doctor visits are usually monthly. However you require visiting your doc every two weeks in case you opt for invisalign appliances for having them replaced.

Regular Consultation
Profile rating: The invisalign braces are popular between professionals and youngsters where they are conscious of their self-image and want to feel comfortable in public.

Ability to detach: More clearly identified as fixed braces, the braces involve the dentist for removal. Usually, you can consider them as permanent for an estimated period of around two years. With invisalign, you have the ability to detach them whenever you want.

Maintenance: Though you cannot remove braces, it helps streamline the maintenance and eliminates the chances of misplacing them. Yet, the maintenance of invisalign is fairly quick and easy by the way of scrubbing.

Pain: When you look at the metal wires inside one’s mouth, the first impression of is extreme pain. Yet, the fact is that braces may be uncomfortable after a dental treatment but not really painful. Invisalign, however is painless with minor discomfort or sensation during the change from one set of appliance to the other.

Comfort: In most of the cases, invisalign has been found much more comfortable than the customary braces. It even brings less tooth soreness and is smoother in jaw movements. Compared to the pokey braces and metal wires bothering your cheeks and lips in the braces, the BPA free clear plastic of invisalign brings comfort.

Comfort

Complexity: For complex cases where tooth alignment is required, your doctor may offer you only braces and no other choice. Invisalign is ineffective in treatments like canine tooth rotation and vertical movement.

Duration: One may need to wear the braces 24/7 for at least two years. Yet, for its counterpart, invisalign may be required for 6 to 18 months. The duration of the treatment varies from case to case.

Tooth Decay: Because of their permanent nature, braces might result in tooth decay which becomes visible only after they are removed. Keeping the mouth and appliance clean is much easier with invisalign.

Fees of treatment: Invisalign is highly popular and hence it is way more expensive than its traditional braces.

Dental braces are now widely used as an effective tool to straighten teeth. The dental braces have been a boon for millions of people longing to have a beautiful smile. A large number of people who get braces are kids and teenagers who want to improve their appearance by straightening their crooked teeth. Braces are more than just a simple cosmetic tool.

Metal and Invisalign braces

Treatment plans are customized for each patient, most wear their braces from one to three years, depending on what conditions need correcting.Although a little discomfort is expected during treatment, today’s braces are more comfortable than ever before. Newer materials apply a constant, gentle force to move teeth and usually require fewer adjustments. There is a comprehensive range of braces available these days and the choice is not limited to one or two options only. Types of braces include:

Metal braces/Traditional braces – These are the metal brackets and wires that most people picture when they hear the word “braces.” However, modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious “metal-mouth” braces that many adults remember. Plus, new heat-activated arch wires use your body heat to help teeth move more quickly and less painfully than in the past. It is least expensive type; colored bands give kids a chance to express themselves.

Invisalign – These braces consists of a series of 18 to 30 custom-made, mouth guard-like clear plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every 2 weeks. Almost invisible, you can eat and drink whatever they want.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces – These are virtually invisible braces and are worn behind the teeth. The best option if you don’t want anyone to get to know that you are wearing braces.

Damon Braces – This is an advanced orthodontic system of straightening the teeth. The demon braces produces results of straightening the teeth in much shorter time as compared to the other types.

Insignia Braces – This treatment is of a very high quality and works on a one size fits all approach. The Insignia Braces are ideal for everyone of any age.

Interceptive Braces – This is a special treatment for the children. The ideal time for its assessment in between 7-9 years of age so that some specific problems are intercepted early and are treated before they are fully developed.

Interceptive Braces

Fitted with new plastics, metals and ceramics, your mouth will be unfamiliar to the feel of the braces. This may also change the way you brush and floss – just be sure that you devote the same care to your teeth, to avoid staining and tooth decay! Starchy foods, such as potato chips, can also stick to teeth for long periods of time and cause tooth decay. There are foods that can loosen, break or bend wires and bands when you are wearing braces. Avoid hard foods such as nuts and hard cookies. Foods such as apples and carrots should be chopped into small pieces before eating to reduce the stress on your braces. Avoid sticky foods such as caramels, toffees, muesli or fruit bars. No chewing gum! No chewing ice!

Orthodontists suggest cleaning your teeth after every meal, so that food particles don’t get stuck in areas of the braces. Using a high fluoride mouthwash in addition to your daily brushing and flossing can be very helpful in reaching all areas that your toothbrush may have missed.
