Sinus is the anatomical term of the cavities that exist within our body. The sinus in the region of cheekbone is termed as maxillary sinus. Our upper teeth especially the back ones have their roots in close proximity with maxillary sinus. This often result is shrinkage of the bone and in such condition placement of implant becomes a real challenge.
The bone height thus needs to be restored and the procedure carried out is called sinus lift. A highly specialised treatment, implant may be inserted at the same stage or at a later date depending upon the extent of bone shrinkage.
There can be several reason for a patient’s upper jawbone to be insufficient to accommodate a dental implant. It could be because of some gum diseases or bone resorption due to previous tooth extraction. In some cases a bone deficiency may be associated with a previous surgical procedure such as removal of a cyst or tumor.
